Field walking

Wednesday, October 5th, 2005

When out in the field, what do I need to take with me? For theirwork interviews I need a notebook and pen, GPS machine, digital camera and a dictaphone.
If only the GPS could take photos, I lament. Or if only, says Emmet, the digital camera could geotag its images. And now we suggest, if […]

Locative interviews

Tuesday, October 4th, 2005

An interesting aside that came up during our walk of the Pool was that of ‘locative interviews’; conversing with someone during a walk, and geotagging points of interest in the discussion.
Most digital audio interfaces are time based, running from beginning to end. If the subject of the recording is locative, changing and context-sensitive, perhaps a […]

What kind of data?

Monday, October 3rd, 2005

During the month of October, Emmet is preparing a theirwork framework that can be taken into a first workshop with the community. This framework will be a map of Loe Pool. The community will be able to add data, comments and stories to the map. During October, I will initiate the groundwork for the workshop […]

Guided by voices

Monday, October 3rd, 2005

As an addendum to Dom’s previous post on conversation, something we noticed repeatedly during last weekend’s brainstorming session was our attempts to define the tool’s functionality through interface design. This is a natural way to approach software development (”When I sit down to use it, what can it do?”), especially since we’re both designers, but […]

Conversation versus refined writing

Monday, October 3rd, 2005

When studying yourhistoryhere we started questioning our use of a wiki platform to develop a community. We started wondering if theirwork’s interface should be based on comment entries rather than wiki entries. This led us to imagining an interface that presented the user with both types of entries. You could have comment sections available for […]

Flickr feed added

Sunday, October 2nd, 2005

I’ve added a feed of our Flickr photos to the footer of the blog homepage. I see that the tagcloud down there is beginning to fill out too, with ‘map’ emerging as an early leader.

Why we are not using Google Maps

Sunday, October 2nd, 2005

Since Google released the API for their mapping software a couple of months ago, a huge amount of work has been done by amateur developers to create their own mapping projects, with new examples appearing every day. This has been ostensibly good for the online mapping community, raising the general profile of the practice and […]

Evocative information tool

Sunday, October 2nd, 2005

During last weekend, Emmet and I earmarked time to discuss existing map software, such as goolemaps. Importantly, we also wanted to look at how others were appropriating such software. One project doing this has just arrived http://www.yourhistoryhere.com/ We started observing this in some detail because not only is it using googlemaps, it’s setting out to […]
